Budget 2005: Reaction

Here is a sampling of the early reaction to the 2005 Budget tabled by Finance Minister Ralph Goodale this afternoon.

Air Transport Association of Canada:

By not reducing airport rent, the Government is wilfully undermining the economic competitiveness of the Canadian air transportation system.
- ATAC President Cliff Mackay on the government's decision not to reduce airport rents for airlines

Federation of Canadian Municipalities:

The New Deal is now a real deal-and it is a good deal for our communities and for Canadians.
- FCM President Ann MacLean on the commitment to deliver gas tax money to municipalities

Canadian Olympic Committee:

The increase demonstrates the federal government's increasing commitment to high performance sport in Canada. This new funding will help build long-term sustainability for the sport community and greater success for all our athletes.
- COC President Michael Chambers on the increase in funding for amateur sports

Canadian Federation of Students:

During the election Paul Martin promised to restore core funding by creating a dedicated transfer payment for post-secondary education of $7 to $8 billion. He broke that promise today.
- CFS National Chairperson George Soule on the creation of a dedicated education transfer to the provinces

Canadian Chamber of Commerce:

Canada's largest business organization warned against the lack of balance in the budget, pointing to the long list of substantial spending initiatives that clearly outweigh productivity enhancing measures, including more immediate tax relief.
- COC News Release

Toronto Board of Trade:

We can't give this budget a higher grade than 'B' ... it's okay, but not great.
- BoT President Glen Grunwald

Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters:

This is an election budget. There are a lot of back-end measures that won't take effect for years down the road.
- Jayson Myers, CME Senior Vice-President and Chief Economist

Certified Management Accountants of Canada:

This is a back-ended budget that delivers a backhand blow to Canadians.
- Michael Tinkler, federal budget analyst for CMA Canada
