Secret AdScam testimony spurs election talk

Testimony heard today by the Gomery inquiry into AdScam is considered so explosive it could prompt the dissolution of Parliament and a Spring election. The testimony from Jean Brault of ad firm Groupaction is the subject of a publication ban and cannot be made public, but it is considered so damaging to Paul Martin's minority Liberal government that all parties are preparing for possible election scenarios, says the Canadian Press (CP).

The parties are not speaking publicly about the impact of the testimony, in part because it might violate the publication ban, but also because none of the parties wants to incur the wrath of voters who last went to the polls just nine months ago.

According to CP, the governing Liberals have asked MPs in safe seats to get in touch with neighbouring constituencies where the local party apparatus needs help getting organized for an election.

One Liberal MP (who asked not to be identified) told CP the Liberals' "election readiness went up 20 per cent today."

Since I do not know what was said (and if I did, it would be illegal for me to write about it here), it is difficult to assess how likely an election actually is. However, if the AdScam commission heard testimony that ties the trail of taxpayers' money from the Liberal government in Ottawa, through advertising firms and finally into Liberal Party coffers (the smoking gun for which many have been looking since the scandal broke) an election is inevitable once the information becomes public. Justice Gomery has said he may make some of the testimony public, but there is no guarantee he will do that with whatever today's revelation is. It is also possible Prime Minister Paul Martin might call a snap election before the testimony is made public in the hope of blunting its impact on his electoral chances.

Either way, get ready for another month-and-a-half of politicians on your television every day.
