Gomery: Brault testimony claims its first victim
The Chief of Staff to Heritage Minister Liza Frulla has stepped aside as a result of being named in the course of Jean Brault's testimony to the Gomery Commission. According to Brault, Mr. Welch was paid an $80,000 a year salary by his advertising firm. But Mr. Welch did not work for Groupaction, he was a Liberal Party organizer in Quebec.
Ms. Frulla told the Canadian Press Mr. Welch will continue to be paid as he "fights to clear his name."
Mr. Brault alleged senior Liberals pressured him to hire Mr. Welch, but when asked what Mr. Welch did, he could only say this:
"He came to the office, he was very active on the telephone and we were made to understand that he did work of one nature or another for the party.''
Despite Mr. Brault's testimony and Mr. Welch's decision to step aside, Ms Fulla cautioned the public not to jump to conclusions.
"These are allegations,'' she said. "You don't automatically condemn someone on the basis of allegations.''
Still, Mr. Welch's voluntary suspension with pay will make leave the scent of blood in the water and attract opposition sharks trying to score themselves another Liberal meal.
