Tory wins by-election easily
Ontario Conservative Leader John Tory has easily won a seat in the Provincial Legislature. With 255 of 269 polls reporting in the riding of Dufferin-Peel-Wellington-Grey, Mr. Tory has 55.8% of the vote, more than three times the total of his nearest competitor.
While the Tory victory is not a surprise, the weakness of Liberal candidate Bob Duncanson who has only garnered 16.4%. That is about half the support the Liberal candidate received in the riding in 2003 General election. Liberal voters have defected en-masse to the NDP and the Greens, both of whom have seen their popular support double.
This disastrous result for the Liberals comes despite the fact the Party ordered all of its Ministers into the riding over the course of the by-election period and the repeated visits of the Premier to the riding. Clearly the Liberals are still in the doghouse with voters over their record of broken promises and government by trial balloon.
This may be a preview of things to come. It is the second by-election loss for the Liberals and both have shown the trend of Liberal voters defecting to other parties in large numbers. One wonders if Premier Dalton McGuinty can pull his Party's winning coalition back together before the next General Election.
