A Jerry Springer Moment
Call a television executive at home and threaten him - it's the Christian thing to do... at least in Britain.
The BBC has had to hire private security guards to protect two of its top executives after a Christian group published their home phone numbers on their website. The group was angered by the Beeb's decision to air Jerry Springer - The Opera. The musical, which features more curse words than a trucker's convention, aired at 10 pm Saturday night and was watched by an above-average audience, according to the Guardian.
It isn't just the swearing that has Christians angry. The musical features songs with names like: "Chick with a Dick," "Eat Excrete" and "Adam and Eve and Mary."
So it isn't exactly family viewing and the content is certain to offend many. [As an aside, both of my humans had the chance to see Jerry Springer - The Opera during its award winning run in London's West End. What was shocking to both was the number of people who didn't realize they were going to watch an over-the-top fictionalized version of Springer's television show with all its depravity, swearing and fighting. Many were so offended, they walked out. They were offended despite the warnings on posters advertising the show, in the theatre, in the program and the one read over the theatre's sound system before the show begins. Walking out is actually a mistake because you end up missing the point of the whole thing, which is undoubtedly why some Christians are angry - they missed the point.]
But surely nothing in the show (if anything ever) justifies threats of violence against a TV executive. And surely that isn't the Christian thing to... hold it, I forgot about the Crusades, the Inquisition...
I guess I'm fighting an uphill battle.
