'Where's the party?'
A fan asked this question as she stood on the corner of Yonge and Dundas Streets in Toronto an hour after last night's Argonaut victory in the Grey Cup game. It was a good question.
On Yonge St, where generations of Toronto sports fans have gathered after their team won the sometimes not so big game, police and journalists outnumber fans. There were few cars driving up and down annoyingly honking their horns, there was only the odd 'AaaaarrrrrrrGoooooos' cheer and just a smattering of team flags being waved in celebration.
So the answer to the fan's question: There was no party. Toronto greeted its team's victory in the country's most important football game with a resounding "Oh, that's nice."
That is a sad reflection on the state of football in Canada's largest city.
The Argos are a team that barely pulls in enough fans to keep it operational despite the tradition of on-field excellence the team represents. They have now wan 16 Grey Cup, the most recent (before last night) was seven years ago.
Compare that to the record of hockey's Toronto Maple Leafs. They haven't won the NHL championship since 1967 and have only shown brief flashes of brilliance since then. Despite that, Leafs games are almost always sold out and when the team wins a playoff game (not the Stanley Cup or even a playoff series), fans flock into the streets to celebrate in the thousands.
Clearly Torontonians don't care about their football team.
With no end in sight for the hockey lockout, it is sad that Toronto fans can't get up for what is likely going to be their only sports excitement this year. The only question left is: Will anyone show up for tomorrow's victory parade?
