Pottery Barn responds to debate slur
Okay, that headline is a little provocative, but the US Presidential debate was so boring, I fear I need to exaggerate and sensationalize just to get you to read a piece about the lighter side - sorry.
When trying to make the point that George W. Bush had been warned an Iraq war could go badly, John Kerry said, "Secretary of State Colin Powell told this President the Pottery Barn rule: If you break it, you fix it."
Mr. Kerry was referring to passage from the book Plan of Attack, by Bob Woodward (a good read, by the way). In that passage Mr. Woodward cites US Secretary of State Colin Powell spoke of the "Pottery Barn Rule: if you break it, you own it."
Well, Pottery Barn wants consumers to know there is no such rule. According to the National Post quotes the retailer as saying:
"Pottery Barn does not have a policy of 'you break it, you own it.' We know that on occasion accidents will occur and items may be unintentionally damaged or broken. We would not require a customer to pay for products that are accidentally broken in our retail stores."
They may regret making that statement. It is now open season on vases and tacky mirrors in the retailer's stores.
