No more 'strangers' at Westminster

British MPs are set to end the centuries-old tradition describing visitors to the Commons as "strangers." It is argued the language alienates the public and gives the wrong impression to those who exercise their right to watch their elected officials conduct the business of the nation from the galleries.

While British MPs are trying to join the the rest of us in the 21st century, they might also consider a further revision to the traditions associated with the Opening of Parliament. Tradition requires two courtiers (dressed in what today would be considered clown suits) precede Her Majesty, walking backwards and bowing to her as she makes her way to the Throne in House of Lords. If it wasn't for real it would be comical.
