A challenge for the grammar geeks out there

Question: When is it appropriate to follow the subject "they" with a verb in the singular ("is")?

Answer: When referring to the former Andrew Wilson of Branson, Mo. The former Mr. Wilson has officially changed his name to "They". He says he did it to mock the anonymous "they" who are responsible for nearly everything.

"'They do this,' or 'They're to blame for that.' Who is this 'they' everyone talks about? 'They' accomplish such great things. Somebody had to take responsibility," he said.
