While this poster campaign may have caused controversy I think it was an admirable try. There is nothing more annoying than being in a tight, hot space while someone eats a smelly meal. This is not, however, the only way transit riders offend their fellow commuters. Bad personal hygiene and rudeness abound on our buses and trains.

So I suggest a few more campaigns for subway civility:

• Bathe before you ride: Nobody wants to get on a bus or subway car with someone who smells like a litter box.
• Brush your teeth (or at least chew gum): Your fellow transit riders don't need to know what you had for breakfast.
• Take you backpack off: It might seem funny when your backpack smacks a seated passenger in the face, but it isn't.
• Keep your feet off the furniture: Why should anyone have to sit where your muddy boots have been?
