Restroom plans upset media
The arrangement for restroom facilities at this week's Democratic National Convention have left reporters with a bad case of "potty mouth."
DNC organizers have arranged for the 1200 reporters covering the convention to have access to just 20 port-a-potties outside the media pavilion. The pavilion will be home to all but the select few journalists who will get to spend the majority of their time on the convention floor. That isn't to say the facilities in Boston's Fleet Center will be luxurious - it is an ice hockey arena - but at least there will be running water. There is also no word on whether the media's stalls will be mucked out nightly or not.
What on earth was the DNC thinking? If you want good coverage, don't make the media angry.
Leaving aside the fact that portable toilets are woefully inadequate at the best of times, there simply are not enough. United States law requires the presence of one toilet for every 40 workers on a construction site (also frighteningly inadequate), but the DNC is providing only one toilet for every 60 reporters. I should point out that John Kerry's big supporters in the construction unions are pushing for a 1-to-10 ratio, and may be surprised the Democratic Party thinks 1-to-40 is too many.
Since they are stuck with what they're getting, I would just remind reporters that last week a man was injured while smoking in a portable toilet. So be careful folks!
