Premium may be dangerous to your wealth

A report released today by the Fraser Institute says the Ontario Health Care Premium will have to triple in the next three years to make up for the anticipated increase in health care costs for the province.

The report is called "Paying More, Getting Less" and argues the premium does nothing to reduce abuse of the system and that our publicly financed health care system is not sustainable.

The report raises the spectre of more health care service cuts from a government that was elected by instilling a fear in Ontarians that the Conservatives would cut health care. The "premium" was supposed to prevent that from happening, but if the Fraser Institute is correct, we'll be able chalk that commitment up as yet another broken Liberal promise.

At it's heart, though, the report seems to criticize the McGuinty Government for instituting something that is not a true insurance premium. In this respect the Fraser Institute has done Ontarians a great disservice. It was never Mr. McGuinty's intention to impose a true health care premium. It was to introduce a massive tax increase through the back door and, in so doing, avoid the perception the Liberals had broken yet another promise.

The "premium" was itself a deception of the worst kind and it behooves the Fraser Institute and others to call it what it is instead of letting the McGuinty Liberals off the hook.
