Only in America
![]() | Fireworks are a traditional celebration of the Fourth of July in the United States. This year, fireworks manufacturers and retailers are expecting their biggest year ever. They attribute their upswing in sale over the last few years to resurgent American patriotism (people in the rest of the world can be forgiven for not having noticed any wane in American patriotism) since the terror attacks of September 11th. |

But surely these four fellows are also part of the reason. They are the "exploding terrorist head" fireworks (made in China, of course - after all, there is nothing more patriotic than fireworks made in a foreign land). It is hard to find a good novelty firework these days and these may just fit the bill.
I mean, what could possibly be more satisfying than blowing the head off a terrorist?
Despite the satisfaction that might ensue from their deployment in back yards around the United States tomorrow, there is so much wrong with these that I hardly know where to begin.
Three of the four so-called terrorists (Yasser Arafat, Moammar Kadafi, and bin Laden) have obviously been involved in terrorism, but the fourth (Saddam Hussein) ... well, to be charitable to our American friends on the eve of their national holiday, I will say that the jury is still out on that one. [Others might want to add that Arafat and Kadafi have denounced terror as a political tool. I, however, doubt their claims because terror is a much easier tool to wield than diplomacy and it doesn't require compromise - something dictators are loath to do.]
Then there are the nicknames. Calling Arafat "Rag Head" is blatantly racist and is Kadafi really a "cannibal" or is that a not-so-successful attempt to do word-play on his military rank of Colonel?
Finally, there is the subtle (likely unintended) message. All of these men are of the same religion. In recent years there has been an unfortunate tendency to link the Muslim faith with terror, ignoring the fact that some of the most prolific terrorism was carried out by Catholics in Northern Ireland and Great Britain.
The lesson from these fireworks is clear: keep on hating, it doesn't matter why, just keep on hating. Funny, I imagine a similar message being delivered in terror camps around the world, as well.
