Tories hand Martin an issue
Since the beginning of the election campaign, local Conservative candidates have had just one complaint about the Harper campaign -- they have had to go through central campaign hoops to do interviews with national media and outlets outside their area.
[That any candidate would be wasting his or her time on interviews with media that his or her constituents won't see demonstrates that some candidates (of all parties, I might add) don't understand that their first priority is to get elected, not become a media darling.]
At any rate, those who seek to build their profile through national media exposure now have an example of why the Tories' central campaign has been a bit of a stickler on this point: Scott Reid.
Mr. Reid, was, until just before midnight, the Conservative "Official Languages Critic." But yesterday he was quoted in a Moncton, NB newspaper as having said that a Conservative government would overhaul (read: water down) the Official Languages Act. That stands in stark contrast to his Leader's comments (just the day before) about protecting minority language rights in Canada.
Mr. Reid's comments play right into the hands of Paul Martin who's campaign is trying to paint the Tories and un-Canadian -- and what is more Canadian than having two official languages. Until now, Martin's only line of attack was on health care and that just wasn't sticking. A second issue will add weight to the first and might be enough to save the floundering Liberal campaign.
