Martin's in trouble
Paul Martin’s strategy to demonize Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper isn’t working according to the latest EKOS Research Poll. Harper is almost as trusted as the PM despite the Liberals’ attempts to paint him as the Spawn of Satan and two-thirds of Canadians report that they don’t have concerns about Harper have a secret agenda.
Worse still for Mr. Martin, his call to the faithful, “This is one of the most important elections in Canada’s history,” is motivating the supporters of his opponents. While half of New Democrats and Conservatives feel that way, only 39% of Liberals feel that way.
From here it goes downhill for the PM. 59% say it is time for a change. That’s roughly where the Ontario Tories were during last year’s Provincial election campaign. Half of respondents say that Martin hasn’t shown he deserves to be PM.
So the general public is ripe for another party to convince them that it deserves to lead the country. Will the Tories rise to the challenge? Next week will be crucial.
