Campbell vs the Unions
Unless something changes, there's going to be a showdown in British Columbia this week. Union have asked their workers to go on strike Monday in support of health care workers who have already been on strike for a week.
The government of Gordon Campbell has passed back-to-work legislation but the health workers union has decided to break the law and risk fines of $250,000.
Officially, this dispute is over wages and benefits, but in actual fact it is about labour's irrational hatred of the current BC government and the governement's lack of pragmatism.
This scenario leading to this General Strike would be ludicrous anywhere but in BC where wacky swings from one insanely ideological government to another are only matched by labour unions' adherence to their own out-of-date ideology.
Both sides know that it is only a matter of time until someone dies as a result of this strike, but both are counting on the fact that the other will be blamed for it. They are both gambling with people's lives and both should grow up, leave their baggage at the door and end this dangers game of chicken.
