McGuinty's Secret Plan
A leak out of the McGuinty Liberal Government at Queen's Park has the Province extending the PST to cover "Fast Food" meals. Currently, meals under $4 are not subject to PST but are subject to federal GST. A quick survey of fast food joints in Toronto shows that no (adult) meal comes in under the $4 cutoff, so they are already taxed. But that bagel and coffee you pick up every morning would be subject to this new tax.
So why are the Grits imposing this Coffee tax? Do the hate Tim Horton's? Are they worried about the poor labour conditions of coffee bean farmers in Columbia?
No, I think this is the first step in their secret plant to harmonized the PST with the reviled GST. You might remember that Marie Bountrogianni (now the Children's Services Minister) alluded to this secret plan during last September's election campaign. The idea was greeted with such a furor, that the Libs quickly distanced themselves from the plan. But I think it is back, this time through the back door.
