Is he kidding?
The Liberal Government at Queen's Park is now using some revsisionist history to explain why it's okay to impose the Coffee Tax. You might recall Liberal Leader (and now Premier) Dalton McGuinty saying he wouldn't raise taxes during last Fall's election campaign.
Apparently, you, me and a whole bunch of other people misuderstood what he was saying. That revelation came yesterday from Dalton's right-hand man, Greg Sorbarra. Mr. Sorbarra says they didn't mean that they were going to hold the line on all taxes.
"We said during the election campaign we are not going to raise personal income taxes and we're going to be true to our word on that," Mr. Sorbara told reporters yesterday.
So let me get this straight: You promised not to raise taxes and signed a declaration that you would adhere to the Taxpayer Protection Act (meaning if you did raise taxes you'd have to hold a referendum), but what you really meant to say is: "There is only one tax we will not consider increasing."
Dalton, I think the distinction you are trying to make is lost on Ontarians.
